Nursing Financial Aid

Nurses are a vital part of the healthcare infrastructure. There is always a need for qualified nurses. If you have an affinity for the medical field and enjoy caring for others this may be the perfect career for you. Nursing school can be challenging and costly, however there are many nursing financial aid programs that include loans, grants, scholarships and work study programs. Most any financial aid advisor, regardless of the path you are pursuing, will tell you to get all the federal financial aid you can before turning to other sources.

The United States Department of Education offers a variety of different loans and grants for college students. The first loan you will be directed towards and will probably qualify for is the Stafford loan. These loans can be subsidized or unsubsidized depending on your level of financial need, this relates to the interest and when the student must pay it back. Another federal loan that is totally need based, and limited, is the Perkins loan. It is designed for students with a high level of financial hardship. The government gives the school, rather than the student, the money, so the funds can and do run out for Perkins loans. If this is a loan you are interested in apply as soon as you can.

Grants are wonderful sources of financial aid for nursing students or any other type of college student because the money never has to be paid back. The government offers the Pell Grant. You may be able to find other sources of grants for nursing students by doing your own research online. Or, try asking the financial aid officer at your school what kind of grants are available for students in your field of study. If you already work in the medical field and want to move up to RN status, for example, check with your employer about tuition reimbursement.

Other fantastic sources of nursing financial aid are scholarships. There are all kinds of different scholarships geared towards nursing students, and you can apply for as many as you want. Most are partial scholarships, meaning they pay only a portion of your educational expense. Full scholarships are extremely rare and competitive. However, if you were able to get multiple scholarships this could help you with a substantial portion of your school expenses. Both the Internet and the financial aid office at your school are great places to research available scholarships for nursing students.
